This is the story of young Willie Beech who is evacuated to the country as Britain stands on the brink of the Second World War. He is a sad, deprived child but slowly begins to flourish under the care of old Tom Oakley. However his new-found happiness is shattered by a summons from his mother back in London. As time goes by Tom begins to worry when Willie doesn’t answer his letters, so he goes to London to find him, and there makes a terrible discovery.

My son read this and he said he enjoyed learning about about World War II.
He didn’t like the scary parts.
