The story starts when 9 year old Chiyo Sakamoto is sold to a geisha boarding house and her older sister is forced to become a prostitute.

This is beautifully written and shows the reader insight into a small aspect of the world of geishas.
The story line drags at times and can be slow but at the same time this is not an action novel.
