Ayla is a Cro-Magnon child who loses her parents in an earthquake. She is adopted by a tribe of Neanderthal, the Clan. At first, the Clan is wary and suspicious. Under the guidance of its medicine woman Iza and its wise holy man Creb, most of the Clan accept her. But a youth who is destined to become their next leader sees her differences as a threat to his authority. He develops a deep and abiding hatred for the strange girl of the Others, and is determined to get his revenge.
